Has anyone been through the appeals?

Has anyone did home value appeals?

  • The property tax is about 20% higher than what I paid for my home, and the tax is much higher than average around in the same area, how often appeals take and what are chance of success? previous owner did improvement with permit, and they try to charge the amount of improvement to my tax.

  • Answer:

In most states the county assessor will do a reassessment of the property upon request. Because there is a great deal of those now they are taking a long time. Do it yourself. There are companies that claim they do it for you but they really only fill out the request and send it to the assessor.

If there was an improvement done to the property no matter who paid for it, then if the improvement increased the value of the property, the house is now assessed higher so tax would be higher. You are now benefitting from that improvement. If you can find COMPARABLE homes in your area, with the same level of improvements as your house, that are taxed lower, you might havew a chance at winning an appeal.

Contact your county Tax Assessor's office. There are reassessment request procedures.
