How do I apply for unemployment?

How do I apply for an unemployment extension in CA?

  • I am coming up on my last claim check for unemployment...I have been unsuccessful with my job search so far and have heard that I can apply for an extension. Does anybody know the steps I need to take to apply for an extension? I have also heard that EDD automatically sends you forms for an extension. Any advice would help. Thanks!

  • Answer:

CA doesn't send you any forms for an extension. They do all the paperwork for you and you just keep continuing to claim. It's truly wonderful. But that's because CA is smart. They know that the unemployed spend nearly every penny they get, so they pay sales taxes which CA needs to keep going. I'm assuming that you are currently on your first 26 weeks of state funded benefits. Your extension will be for 20 weeks which will take you past the November 27, 2010 deadline. So after those 20 weeks are up, chances are good that you will get no further benefits. It's always possible that Congress will look at the unemployment rate in November and decide to extend the time people can continue to apply for extensions, but don't bet your rent on it.
