Can I work in Michigan but live in Indiana?

If I work in Indiana but live in Illinois, How will the taxes work?

  • I have to live in Illinois to continue my Veterans Benefits, but I have found a great job in Indiana. How will the taxes work?

  • Answer:

You'll have to pay taxes in Illinois, but you'll be deducted as Indiana taxes. You'll end up having to file an Indiana non resident tax return, to get most of your Indiana tax back, but you may have to pay Illinois before you can do that. It's not a terribly complicated process, but it's messy. Still, millions of people do it every year.

You may end up paying two lots of taxes, .. one for your state taxes for Illinois, and then the 2nd lot for your employment taxes from your wage ( the taxes that are automatically garnished from your pay cheque. But you would have to tell them you do not reside in Indiana. And file a non Indiana resident tax return. But getting a hold of a tax person will be your best bet.. http://www.hrblock.com/taxes/products/product.jsp?productId=44&otpPartnerID=2432&omnisource=SSP%7CCAMP003HRB%7CADGP005TLPQL%7CKWRD025HRB+Ask+An+Advisor+TLP+QL

where ever you live. then you can consider the expenses you need to accumulate for working in different state.
