Non profit meet up group?

If a group is a non-profit in Tanzania, can people get US tax-deductions if they donate? What about the UK?

  • I am trying to raise money for an organization in Tanzania that is registered with the Tanzanian government as a non-profit oriented Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). I would like donations to be tax-free and tax-deductible. I also know of an umbrella organization in the UK that has handled donations for the organization in Tanzania in the past, and they are registered as a non-profit in the UK. How can I make donations tax deductible? Should I go through the UK organization, work with Tanzania directly, or try to find an umbrella non-profit in the US? I am time and people limited, so I can't make my own non-profit. Thanks.

  • Answer:

Charitable donations are ONLY tax deductible in the US if the organization is a registered 501(c)3 charity under the US Tax Code. While there are some foreign charities that are, you will need to verify that first if you intend to let the tax deductibility influence your decision to donate.

While you can not make tax deductible contributions to a foreign charity, there may be a USA charity whose mission is to support a foreign charity. You can make tax deducbitle contributions to it. For example, I make a deductible charitable contribution to a US religious organization whose mission is operating an orphanage in Mexico.
