Can i file for unemployment?

Can't file taxes without 1099G Unemployment form. Do I file an extension?

  • Last year I collected unemployment benefits from the state of California. The only 1099G that I received, through the mail, was for California State Tax. I requested another 1099G from unemployment to be mailed to me which will take 5 days to receive. Do I file an extension with IRS or just mail in my taxes when I receive the 1099G from unemployment and include an explanation as to why I am filing late? Please help. Thanks

Usually in CA you can call an automated number and get your totals.

Well you normally don't have to attach any unemployment documents. If you know how much unemployment (total) you got last year, place it on line 19 of the 1040. If you know how much much taxes you paid, add it on line 44. You normally don't have to attach any form 1099G. But if you're unsure how much you received or how much taxes you paid last year, might be better to get an extension. Or contact a tax attorney, I filed my taxes already with unemployment and the IRS didn't say anything about it. But again I'm not an attorney, best call one if you're unsure
