What is it like to live in Stuttgart, Germany?

Are 2500 euros tax free enough to live in Germany?

  • I received a job offer in germany near stuttgart, for 2500 euros tax free. I am a mechanical Engineer and the job is mostly to work with design in CATIA. I have a family, wife and little daughter. Is this money enough to live and have savings?

  • Answer:

How do you reckon tax free income in Germany? German taxes are fairly high and pretty much all income is taxable. Some foreign worker contracts may be net of tax but that's not the same thing as tax free. You are simply paid enough that you net a specified income after tax. Germany is relatively expensive and Stuttgart is a major city with typically high cost of living. $2,500 Euros net may be enough to survive on if your employer is providing health insurance as part of your package but it will be a basic lifestyle. If you can get by without a car (Stuttgart has excellent public transportation) then you may do OK. 2,500 Euros per month, even net of tax, sounds low for an engineer in Stuttgart, a major engineering city.

Hardly Germany is pretty expensive, don't expect a luxury lifestyle, do you have to pay for accommodation as well? You need two incomes for a decent lifestyle.

There is no way that this is legitimate. EUR 2,500 per month (EUR 30K p.a.) is way less than a qualified engineer in Germany would make.
