How do you add tax to things?

Having taxes done professionally or with turbo tax free edition, which is better?

  • I have done my own taxes for a while now with the Turbo tax free edition and I've been happy with it so far. Now I am going to be itemizing for the first time and I wonder if maybe I should go to a professional. The thing is our med bills don't add up to be enough to claim, Our work supplies also don't add up to enough to claim, I don't have many things that really are deductible (just mortgage interest, property taxes, child care, IRA contributions, & Charitable contributions). So I think to myself. Do I really want to pay $200 dollars to have a professional do what I think Turbo Tax can do just as easily for free? So that is my question, I've already figured out my taxes with Turbo Tax (just haven't submitted it), Now I want to know if a Tax professional will help me get more money back than Turbo Tax claims?

  • Answer:

My suggestion is to take some time and work with the Turbo Tax first. (I understand the previous poster states it's not free - however, I only had to pay because I wanted TT to complete my state taxes as well so it was only $14.95,). I was in the exact same situation as you (with what I was able to claim), and it really worked out for me. All you really lose is the time playing around with it. Good luck!

You don't need a "tax professional." But you do need the TurboTax Deluxe software, not the freebie.
