How do I get a Certificate of Exemption?

  • So, I'm applying for an account with a supplier and they've asked for my Certificate of Exemption. I have a Sales and Use Tax Number, and a form that I have printed, but not filled out that is called a Certificate of Exemption. I am a little confused as to it's use. I thought that this form was something that I could possibly fill out and use in stores when buying supplies to be tax exempt? I haven't filled it out because obviously I don't know, and haven't had time to investigate. Now that the supplier is asking for this info I'm wondering if I was supposed to fill it out and mail it in?

    Supplies that you consume in the course of your business are NOT exempt from sales taxes. ONLY goods (including raw materials that will be turned into finished goods) that you purchase for resale are exempt from sales taxes. You must provide a copy of your exemption certificate to every supplier from whom you make tax-exempt purchases. You complete and sign a copy of the certificate and give it to the supplier.

You'd get it from your state dept of revenue. It covers items you but for resale, not items you buy to use for your business like supplies. It should have come with the paperwork when you got your sales tax license for your business. Read the form - sounds like you already have what you need.
