How does tax work for freelancers in Ireland?

How does tax work for freelancers in Ireland?

  • I have been doing odd jobs as a translator and gained a lot of experience and a French company has contacted me to offer me lots of freelance work, but I have to have a VAT number. What are the legal procedures to go through to become a "registered" freelancer in Ireland? How do I get that VAT number and how much tax will I have to pay? Thanks for any info!!

  • Answer:

If its Southern Ireland, I moved over from England to do a contract. The first thing is to get a PPS number similar to a National Insurance number, the thing is you need a letter from your landlord/B&B house that you are staying there. As a freelancer I would suggest you use an accountant who put you under a umbrella company and they would use there VAT number instead. A accountant normally charges 5% of your earnings. The tax side is as a single person you can earn upto 31,000 euros at 20% and then after that its 41% but a good accountant can drop that amount by 15%. A bank to use is AIB or Halifax. Good luck anyway
