What is it like to be a full time college student?

What is the government's rationale in having a full-time college student be a dependent on parents taxes?

  • It just makes little sense to me, my parents provide me with no tuition assistance, and I pay my own bills- yet they are still able to claim me because I am a full-time student (yet, I work full-time as well) and I'm under 24. Also, why does the government take my parents income into account on the FAFSA when they do not provide me tuition assistance either?

  • Answer:

You don't have to be dependent on their returns. You can claim yourself for the personal exemption. The government just ASSUMES that your parents provide supports for you. In addition, they are "technically" suppose to be provide at least half your support (housing, food, etc, does not necessary just means BILLS). However, if you do claim your own personal exemption, MAKE SURE that your parents do not claim you.
