Im employed HR Block Seasonal Tax Prep, if I quit, can I work for someone else? Confused over Ctec bond ?
-
Okay this is very confusing and I want serious answers, preferbly anyone who works for accounting firms, HR Block, etc. First year about to start preparing taxes for HR Block. Now I am going to work until April 16th (or around there). Now I signed a contract I cant work for any taxes same time I work for HR Block (understandable) but my QUESTION is: as preparers we are bonded by CTEC and that expires end of October 2008. So does that mean I cant work for accounting firm (that does taxes) or any other tax office UNTIL Nov 2008 or as long as I am not "employed" with HR Block (for example: in June 2008 I can work for different tax office?)?. Its little confusing and hope im making sense. IM finishing college in June and I really want to start my career with a CPA firm but I dont want to work for HR Block if they wont even let work for anyone else because of the contract I signed. (and for me to take a look at the contract I have to wait til Jan 2nd cuz theyre closed)..

Answer:
From what I understand of HRB's contract, once your seasonal contract expires in April, you are free to work for whoever you want. The "no compete clause" in the contract forbids you from "stealing" HRB's clients.

I had a similar problem with Jackson Hewitt. I am bared from working with any other tax service until next year. Which means I signed a 2 year contract dumb huh? H& R block my be different. Anyway I don't know for sure but since your working in California I guessing since you said CTEC. When I worked for JH they paid my bond which was $5000 so I was obligated to work for them since they paid the bond. But maybe if you pay it yourself after the normal tax season you can work for some one eles. Is your problem working with H&R as a whole company or it it like JH a franzise company in which people buy into to it to use the name ect.? The Jackson Hewitt company I worked for was the contract said you had to work for Jackson Hewitt it didn't say which one you had to work for. Mu boss lost a lot of the workers he trained like this the main reason why he send a few of us from Oregon to work in California. One other piece of advice if you apply for Jackson Hewitt (Fast Tax) hit the road running don't look back trust me on this one. Anymore questions emial me I don't mind?

The bond is required by the State of California for CTEC preparers. It has nothing to do with your contract with Block. You will be a seasonal employee with Block and on you own after the season ends. While you are there, take advantage of some non-monetary opportunities and try to get the ugliest returns you can for the educational value to you. Doing 1040-A's isn't going to help you much if you want to be a CPA. You should also inquire what Block could do for you if you became an Enrolled Agent.
