How can I get my sales tax back in Germany?

  • I remember when I came here a few years ago, my mom was able to fill out a form so we got back the sales tax we paid on clothing and other items. Does anyone know where I can get access to these forms/ what the general guidelines are? I'm living here for 2 months and figure I could save a few dollars.

    You get back VAT on goods you exported from Germany. So, if you're a tourist, and buy clothes that you're taking home with you, you can apply to have the VAT refunded. This is typically taken care of at the airport. So, if by "living here", you mean in Germany, then you don't qualify, because you are consuming the goods and services in Germany. It's only goods that you take home with you that are eligible for the refund.
