Is it possible to get GST/HST Credit for past years?

  • Hi, I didn't file the 2006 income tax on time. Along with my 2007 Income tax application, I sent the 2006. I also applied for GST/HST credit and QST credit. Yesterday I received the GST/HST credit, but the amount was only 1/4 th of the credit for 2007. I didn't receive the GST/HST credit for 2006. First of all am I eligible to get the GST/HST credit for a year that I applied late? If I am eligible when will I get the credit? Will it be paid in full or in installments? Does the same thing applies for QST credit? Thanks.

    The GST credit based on your 2006 tax return would not have been paid in 2006. If you had filed your 2006 return on time, it would have been paid quarterly in July, Oct of 2007, and then in Jan, April of 2008. If you haven't received that yet, contact GST at 1-800-959-1953 and ask them about it. The regular payment for July, 2008 would be the first quarterly payment based on your 2007 return. About QST... I don't live in Québec, so I don't know anything about that one. I would assume it's either Revenu Québec or Régie des rentes that pays it out, though. Try contacting one of those.

I am in a similar situation, and when applying for the GST/HST credit, I was told that would receive a lump some for the previous years that i had not applied for. But the date was never specified. I will probably give them a call this Friday, if i have not received the GST/HST for previous years. I hope people who have gone though this situation will share their knowledge here John

It takes longer to process previous years' returns so it might be a while before they issue a cheque. The 2007 one is correct since you applied for it when you filed your taxes this year. The GST credit is paid quarterly so you will get another payment of the same amount in October.
