Can international students in Canada bring along their Spouse and Kids?

Canada Tax. married living in Egypt now for 4 yrs no visits to Canada. Foreign spouse 3 kids. how to file?

  • In the box for spouse it asks for SIN number which he obviously doesn't have. Am I a deemed non-resident if I have furniture and my family back home? I have no income here in Egypt as well. Some help plz as it is hard to call CRA over the phone here

  • Answer:

You don't state many things: are you a Canadian citizen? Why would you start filing Canadian taxes now if you still live in Egypt? If you have no income, why are you worried about taxes? Read the pages below to determine if you have been a non-resident for the past 4 years. How hard is it to call CRA at +1 604 689 5411?? They are courteous and very helpful.

If you don't live in Canada and have severed ties and have no business dealings, income from property or employment income here, then it's likely you're not taxable, nor required to file Canadian returns. If you have not severed ties sufficiently (still have centre of vital interests here), then you may be required to file a return, but would not be taxable since you have no income. You would not qualify for any benefits if you're not physically resident in Canada. Read the Interpretation Bulletin on residency in Canada, available on CRA's website. www.cra.gc.ca
