Can I go on vacation for 1 week while on EI?
-
I unfortunatley got laid off about a month ago from my engineering company due to the economy's depression. I already planned to take a vacation with my friends to Cancun about a year ago and I've already paid my deposit ($250) and already gave the money to my friend for the vacation fee ($1508) which is due April 1st. I applied for EI last week and will not be recieving my first pay check until mid April (long before paying for the trip). I have proof of payment for the deposit and will have proof of payment for the trip soon enough. What are the cirumstances that apply to my situation? Will they really not allow me to go for a vacation I've already planned and paid for (before my first check)? And is it possible for them to NOT pay me for the 7 days I am gone so I will not be doing anything illegal?

Answer:
You certainly can go on vacation when you are on EI, but, you are not eligible for payment while you are out of the country or not available for work. This is not true for a maternity claim, you can be anywhere in the world and still collect maternity benefits. The important thing is that you let EI know when you are leaving and when you will be back. Phone the EI call centre before you go, keep trying to get through if you don't make it the first time I hear they're really busy right now. All that will happen is that you will not receive EI benefits for the time you are on vacation. Don't think they won't find out if you don't tell them...don't even THINK about trying to hide it from them...they share information with other government departments on this issue and will find out and then you are subject to ALL kinds of grief, penalties, payback of benefits and so on.

Dale is correct. I personally know someone who went to Cancun while on EI, did not report it "Hey, it's only a week!", and about a month after she returned, she got nailed by a cross reference with canada Customs. It cost her the week's pay, plus fines. It also means they'll watch her claims extra careful next time. So do it right.

Dale and quizzard are correct. u have to inform the government when u are not available for work. i don't know if u still have to complete the forms, it's been years since i did it. anyway, just tell them about the week u are away and everything will be cool.

I dont understand why you would not be able to go on vacation. My friends and I travel to the states quite often and I am on EI... been on since Aug. Then again, I am on mat leave.. it may be different. You should call them just to make sure
