Whats "Low income" bracket for a family of 4?Ontario Canada 2008 income tax?

  • I have a family of 4 two adults and two toddlers. I know that Low income family are subject to deductions, and eligible to claim a portion of rental payments. Can you tell whats low income? I though it was under 35,000 a year, but i have found no answer. Thanks

You will need to calculate your taxes. The benefits etc., depend on lots of things, including income, but also just how much rent you pay, the number and ages of kids, and so on. You figure it all out, and get tax credits, which lower the tax you would have paid, based on the tax rate for that income level. There is no "magic cutoff" - most of these things are graduated. The less you earn, the higher the level of tax credit. I earned about $24,000 for 2007 from a pension, and still ended up having to pay a bit for OHIP. However, I also ended up getting more back than was actually deducted, so the credits helped me. For 2008, I was working, so I expect I'll get fewer credits, but as my income was still fairly low, I just might get a little. Just not nearly as much.
