Self Employed - Internet Business ( Question about taxes)?

  • I am only 18 years and don't really know how the tax system works in Canada. I have a question to ask because it is bothering me for many days now. So, here it is ... Let's say if I do internet marketing ( I sell products as an affiliate and get commission ) from my laptop and I make over $ 1000 000 a year in commission from my sales. If I am getting cheques from the United States, do I still have to pay any tax in Canada? Please note that I DO NOT have any registered business or a company. I am just an affiliate selling other peoples' products on the internet and mainly targeting US and CANADA customers.

    If you are resident in Canada you are obliged to report and if appropriate, pay taxes on your worldwide income. Even if the business isn't registrered, you are self employed and making money. You are legally required to file and pay taxes if you owe taxes. If your net business income is over about 15K per year, and you're single, you'll probably have to pay something. Even if there's no taxes, you might owe CPP on your self employment income. In any case, you are required to keep adequate business records so you can determine your income and if and how much you owe for taxes. If your gross business income is over 30K in a year or a quarter you have to register for GST/HST in the following period. The CRA's website has good general information on all of this. If you are in business you are obliged to take reasonable steps to find out what your obligations are.

That's what they told you? Like you will make one million in commission from your sales? Man let me tell you something, don't cash their cheques and DO NOT send them any money first...it's a huge scam. And yes you have to pay taxes if you make more than $10,000 a year in income, but don't worry you won't make anything even close from internet commission...it's a hard world out there.
