Spanish income tax questions.

Income Tax Questions?

  • When I file my income tax for 2010 I use Turbo Tax and I see a $2900 return. I have school tuition that are carried over. When I add my wifes income tax detail, (because I have to file as married), it is reduced to $1600. She also has tuition carry overs. When I file them separate I see $2900 for myself and when I file hers she gets $2000. But, when we file as a couple why is the income tax rebate much lower.

  • Answer:

How do you "file as a couple"? Canada does not have joint tax returns. You each file separately. By the way, you get a refund, not a return.

The reason it is showing a higher tax refund is because the tax software automatically calculates your return as you provide the information. The $2900 shows up after you enter that you are married but before you enter her net income so it is showing a refund based on your wife having no income at all and calculating a spousal credit based on zero income. Once you enter her income, then it recalculates so that you don't mistakenly get additional credits that you would not otherwise be entitled to.
