Why not to complete a GST application?

About GST/HST credit application?

  • how does it work? how many times do you apply a year? in the application I can only tell the governement about my income, how will they know how much tax I paid ?

  • Answer:

The GST/HST credit for individuals is based on income, not on how much tax you actually pay. You should only have to apply once, and future calculations will be determined based in your income tax filings. See the below link for more details.

The GST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment. It is based on your income, not how much tax you pay. You have to apply every year. To apply is simple. You just check "yes" in the box that asks if you are applying for the GST credit when you fill out your tax return. Since they get the amount based on your income tax return, you must file every year if you want to continue receiving the credit. Remember that, if you have a spouse, he or she must also file a return every year because they use both of your incomes to calculate the credit, and only one of you will receive the credit.
