Pizza Delivery driver income?

  • I work as a pizza delivery driver (Part Time) and i get paid cash per hour plus delivery charge for each delivery. I live in Manitoba. I wanted to know if this is my self employed income? Can i claim my gas bills, car insurance and car repair etc.? Pls guide me?

  • Answer:

This is self employment income. You may or may not receive a T4A slip from the employer but regardless you need to report the income. You can also claim your vehicle expenses including fuel, insurance, repairs, and lease payments but you will need to prorate these items for the business use portion. The personal use portion is not deductible. If you own the vehicle you can also claim capital cost allowance (which is tax lingo for depreciation). Any other reasonable expenses that you have incurred to enable you to earn the income can also be deducted, such as a portion of your mobile phone bills. All of the income and expenses are reported on a form called T2125. Here is a link to the CRA page on self employment income: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tpcs/slprtnr/rprtng/menu-eng.html If you are not comfortable with these forms and calculations then I recommend consulting a professional tax preparer such as a CGA, CMA or CA.
