A tax professional vs Tax Software?

Business Tax Software vs. Accountant?

  • Hello. I started my business last year (May 2008). Is it best to use an Accountant for filing my taxes, or is Business Tax software better? If I went with an Accountant, what information is required?

  • Answer:

the last guy sounded like an accountant. If you choose to bring your work to a professional, check out many of the independent businesses specializing in Taxes, Accounting, etc. Many of them are completely competent and often up to 75% cheaper than overpriced CAs, CPAs, CGAs etc who charge you for their name and pricey office. A lot of work gets done by $12 per hour articling students, but the invoice gets signed by the $350 per hour "ACCOUNTANT". Call around, check references, ask how long they have been in business. You can tell if someone knows their job. GOOD LUCK WITH THIS, with your business, and don't get ripped off.

If you have your own business, you're probably going to want to work with a good accountant (ideally a CPA, Certified Professional Accountant). Owning your own business makes you much more likely to be audited, and it also means that you have a lot more potential deductions-- two good reasons why it makes sense to use a professional rather than just software!
