What taxes do I have to charge on my website?

Do Canadian/US taxes come into play if I mail my customers their purchases from Asia?

  • If I am getting a dropshipper from Asia to directly mail US/Canadian customers their purchases (clothes/shoes/accessories) that they ordered on my website that's based in Asia, do I have to charge my customers taxes? If so, what kind of taxes am I looking at for both the US and Canada, and how do customs know if taxes have been paid on these purchases? I am confused because my mom has sent me a LOT of clothes and shoes through mail (without stating how much they cost when these huge packages were well over $100 each) that I eventually picked up from Canada Post but neither of us had to pay any taxes, so I am thinking would my customers get charged with taxes if the purchased goods that are sent to them directly from Asia, especially if they only order one or two shirts or a couple pairs of shoes? Does it depend on if my website is based in Asia or in Canada? Detailed explanations (with references if possible) would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Answer:

Exporters never charge taxes. The shipper is responsible for collecting any duty or taxes owed from the customer on delivery.
