Should i fill my schedule up a little more?

For canada tax, do I need to fill out Schedule 11?

  • My previous accountant didn't fill out the Schedule 11 form for Tuition, Education and Textbook Amounts but he attached my T2202A form for that previous year. Now, I'm doing my own taxes and I filled out that form but now I saw the previous Accountant didn't fill out that form. So am I wondering is that form mandatory? Why or why not. Please don't give a vague answer. I don't want to mess up doing my own taxes this time.

  • Answer:

Check your notice of assessment 2009, and see if there is any federal or provincial tuition amount. If there is, then use that amount on Schedule 11 and provincial schedule 11. If you do not have any federal or provincial tuition amount in notice of assessment, then fill out "T1 Adjustment Form", you cannot directly apply any not-reported credits from prior years in current year's return. Send that in and CRA should adjust that for you and you will be able to use it next year. For current year's return, if you are owing taxes because your accountant did not include the schedule last year which caused CRA not recognizing the credits, you should ask them to pay for your taxes' interests as it is their responsibility to make sure the return is filled out accurately and completely. They should know this by now.

Accountants almost never use paper returns. They use programs which do the calculations. It's quite possible the program simply did the calculations on its own, and didn't use Schedule 11 (perhaps because the Schedule 11 is relatively new). It's also possible the accountant just didn't print it out. Regardless, you can do it your way. You're not required to use Schedule 11 if you're confident you can do the calculations yourself, and you're not transferring amounts to anyone else, and you're not carrying forward any amounts. But, other than simple calculations, and especially for transfers and carryforwards, use the schedule.
