Can I claim 2008/2009 and 2010 child support payments on my 20011 taxes?
-
I did not claim 08/09 and 2010 child support payments, because I did not have income in those years. Can I claim these payments on my 2011 taxes in Canada
-
Answer:
No, if you were eligible to claim them, they cannot be carried forward. No, child support payment are not generally deductible. There are some child support payments that are deductible, but only those that came from support orders or agreements from before May 1997 and where certain other conditions are met. You are supposed to report support payments. They get reported in the period you made them, regardless when the payment was due.
