If I apply for disability will I get it?

WILL I GET ANY TAX REFUND IF MY SON IS ON DISABILITY?

  • I'M ON ASSISTANCE IN ONTARIO, NOT WORKING, AND I RECEIVE DISABILITY FOR MY SON. I WAS RECENTLY TOLD THAT I WILL NOT RECEIVE A RETURN DUE TO ALL THE TAX CREDIT PAYMENTS.(GST, OST, HST...) INSTEAD, WHEN I FILE I WILL GET A $25 WALMART GIFT CARD! SO I JUST WANTED TO KNOW DOES THAT APPLY TO PEOPLE WHO RECEIVE PENSION AND/OR DISABILITY CHEQUES ALSO OR ONLY ONES WHO ARE ON FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE?

  • Answer:

People get refunds when they overpay their taxes. If you haven't paid any taxes, then there's no refund to receive. PS. The story about the $25 Wal-Mart gift card is nonsense.

Other answers

A refund may come to someone who has paid tax, but all of your tax credits fall into the category of non-refundable tax credits. You should still file a return if there is any possibility that you may have a much higher income in a later year or you need to qualify for HST payments.
