How do I file taxes when I worked in two different states?

Do you have to file taxes every year?

  • Last year and the, like, two years before, I filed my taxes. This year I only worked 2 days (LOL), because I was injured in a car accident, and got income replacement throughout the whole year. I have a T4 slip, which states my whopping 2 days of work - should I file this? So far, the government hasn't sent me anything saying I owe them money. Should I expect anything back or should I expect to pay them anything?

  • Answer:

You are only required to file a tax return (in Canada) if you owe taxes, or if you are asked by CRA to file. Assuming the income replacement wasn't taxable income, you won't owe. But, if the replacement income was income, but not taxable income (such as WSIB in Ontario), then it will be counted in determining your eligiblity for GSTC and/or CCTB. If it wasn't income at all, (for example, long term disability payments from insurance you paid for) then you'll qualify for GSTC if you otherwise qualify for it.

yes, you should file your tax return every year even if you just work one day. i can bet that your employer will report those two days that you worked and if you fail to report it you will have problems down the line. remember that the gov. has three years to look over all the tax returns for one person, so they might not get to you right away but you can bet they will.

No, you don't have to file a return, but you should. You're likely eligible for GST credits, but the only way you'll get them is to file a return.

Yes, if you've worked any amount of time that year you need to lodge a tax return.
