The CRA Call Me the Past Week and ask Me about My Bank account?
-
Hi, I'm a new Canadian Resident(Just 3 years) and when I came I just came with my car(Approx. $12K from the USA) then I was in the welfare for about 5 Months and then My Brother and I We bought a franchise with my Brother's Money(On His Name off course) and for the past 2 years I been helping My Brother in the Business so He pay my bills and groceries, beside that My Mother comes to visit me and she usually comes with $8,500 - $9,500 in cash for Me to pay my rent and groceries.etc(She is just having good profit from a Hotel that she owns with 12 more partners) So, the past week an Auditor from The CRA call Me to explain about My Bank account deposits and the deposits in the past 2 years are around $90,000 in total(But I never have no more than $9,500 to deposit because My Mother never comes with $10K because of all the paperwork) The Auditor call Me and I told Him that I was available for Him any time(even the very same day He call) but He was Busy so He told Me that Next week. So, My Question Is " If I don't have Bank transfers from western union or nothing like that because The Money was given to Me for My Own Family, How The CRA Auditor can check the accuracy and the help that My Family give Me in this hard Financial Moment that I have right Now?" besides, do I have to pay Taxes for all the Money that I been receiving(Even Money from out of Canada?) I also came without Credit and My Own Mother suggest Me to put $9,000 In a secure Visa Credit Card to start having Credit and I use the Credit Card a lot to pay In the first Month all the balance so My Brother and My Sister give Me the cash and I Use My Credit Card for that and Everything They Need to have rewards.etc, But Is not even My Money. Please Answer Me With Something That can Give Me a Guide. REGARDS! Thank You Robert S

Answer:
You are in a world of hurt. Your mother have given you about $9,000 every two months for nearly two years... in cash? I bet CRA got a call from the RCMP drug task force when their computers lit up about a recent immigrant getting regular cash deposits just under $10,000. Either that, or you haven't filed income tax returns for the past two years. >...How The CRA Auditor can check the accuracy ... They don't have to. Unless you can prove that it was a gift and the funds came from a legitimate source, they can tax it -- plus 1%/month interest, plus late filing charges, etc. Heck, they can seize the money until you prove that it came from a legitimate source. If you want to structure transfers in complex and hard-to-track ways which look like drug smuggling or money laundering... that's your problem, not CRAs. Also, the fact you are working at a company owned by your brother who is paying your bills is also going to scream tax evasion. Why does your business parent pay your rent, food, etc? Why doesn't he pay you money and you pay the bills? Ohh... because that way you have to pay taxes! First thing Monday morning, call a tax lawyer. Don't even think of speaking with the auditor until you've spoken with a lawyer.
