This is a tough issue. on the one hand I don't see donations as a form of income, but on the other hand many religious organizations pay their clergy or workers like they are a fortune 500 company. My feeling is that the organization should not pay for donations into the organization, but should pay the income tax for the pastor/priest even on non-money income like food it gives to the clergy. I don't believe a clergy member should receive special pay that is excluded from income like how some churches treat clergy as stockholders. when it comes to property on one hand the church is being bought by congregant money which is donated. And I am not a fan of taxing donations. On the other hand churches often own vast pieces of real estate that have been known to keep areas destitute by preventing the movement of income generating businesses. I know in a local city one church owns 50% of the downtown. There are 7 churches downtown not affiliated so you have to figure churches account for 90% of the property ownership. How does the city collect taxes to provide for services like the police force if they can't take the only business downtown? I think it's reasonable to not tax the portion of the church considered the worship area of the church. the rest of the building or buildings should be taxed. Those taxes provide the money for services that the church often uses like ambulance and fire protection. In the same way I don't think organizations should be taxed for income or property unless the income is on the people who work there and the property is on the non specialized areas. At a hospital I'd tax for every bed but not for surgery. I'd tax the income of all involved, and I'd even tax the money taken in for services rendered. At a hmeless shelter I wouldn't tax at all

Is this supposed to be a question? It's not. I happen to agree with the statement, though. Why should I subsidize your hobby (religion)?
