How do you raise money to volunteer abroad?

I'm trying to raise money to go and volunteer overseas, how can I make peoples donations tax deductible?

  • I need to ask for donations from people so how would I be able to make it so they get part or all of their money back?

  • Answer:

You can only make donations tax deductible if you are registered as a charity and approved by the Tax Office. There is a lot of information on this ATO link relating to Deductible Gift Recipients (DGR) charities: http://www.ato.gov.au/print.asp?doc=/Content/66281.htm Essentially though it is hard for a charity to become registered as a DGR and an individual will not be able to qualify as a Deductible Gift Recipient. Therefore it will not be possible for your donors to claim any gifts to you for your trip as a tax deduction.

As far as I am aware you have to be an organisation with charity status and with a fundraising number. But I've got to say I am no tax lawyer. Have you checked out the tax site?
