What is the cost of a small house in New Zealand, I need a cheap one, and How are jobs there?
-
I want to just start over, I plan to just move out of country, and an idea came to my head to move to New Zealand, just because of how beautiful it is, im in my early twenties and got a decent amount of money saved up, 35,000...I figured get there and rent a small house there, in till i get my feet on the ground. The only thing is i don't really know the finance situation over there. I did Research and it says it is cheap in some areas but i didn't get much detail. And I really cant find anything on jobs. I don't need any kind of big job and a big house, im fine with middle class. I have a collage education. So ill appreciate it if someone can just give me some info on how jobs are and how my situation is looking out. Thank you.

Answer:
The first thing you need to do is look at www.immigration.govt.nz and see if what you are educated in shows up on the skills shortages lists. But, even before you do that, you might want to plan a visit over here and see if you like it. You might find it isn't what you think it is and hate it - which would be horrible - to be stuck someplace you don't want to be! Also, since you are so young, you could also look at a working holiday visa, which would allow you to live and work in New Zealand for up to a year. (Info is on the immigration website.) Once you got here, if you decide to stay, you could apply for permanent residence (if you qualify). No matter what, don't come here unless you have some sort of work permit in hand. No one will hire you if you can't work in the country, legally. Jobs here - really depends on what your skills are. Being a foreigner, if you and a similarly qualified kiwi apply for the job, the kiwi will get the job. Look at www.trademe.co.nz for jobs, or try www.seek.co.nz. I don't think New Zealand is cheap, anywhere - and I'm from the midwest in the states. Cost of living is high in relation to income. My partner and I live a very simple lifestyle, so we do okay but families seem to struggle, especially with petrol at $2.22 a liter (NZD) and food being expensive. Trademe is also a good place to look for accommodation. You might look at flatting for awhile - sharing a house with other people with similar ages and backgrounds. All you might need to buy is a bed, bed linen, towels, etc. You won't have to buy appliances or cookware and all that. Rent is usually paid weekly, and you can set up an account to pay it automatically. The cost of power and internet are shared, and food might be shared or on your own. Sometimes you can find really, really nice places - with a pool or spa, gourmet kitchens, etc. Or, you might just wind up in a regular little 2 or 3 bedroom house. (You do get used to sharing a bathroom - usually the toilet is in its own little separate room) . It all depends on where you want to live and what's available. You can look at trademe for houses, too. You may be shocked at prices. Real estate is pretty expensive here. Whatever you do, don't rent a place without actually looking at it - pictures can be deceiving and you also want to have a look at the neighborhood before you make any committments.
