Australian youth allowance and paid work?
-
I'm currently a student living out of home and on youth allowance. I was wondering if I make over the $230 threshold or what ever it is per fortnight my Allowence goes down in 50c per dollar does that the whole amount so my ~$400 allowance would then go down to 200 the. I get my pay check from my employer? Making me $430 for the fortnight rather than the $630 that I could receive? Any help on the matter would be great thanks

Answer:
According to page 4 (bottom right column) of this document http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/filestores/co035_1107/%24file/co035_1107en.pdf You will lose ( get deducted from your centrelink payment) 50% of any income between $236 and $316 and then lose (get deducted from your payment) 60% of any income over $316. This means that if you earn under $236 then you get to keep your earnings. If you earnt $316 then you would lose only $40 of your payment ( 316 - 236 = 80 above 236) For any amount over 316 you would get 60% of that amount deducted from your payment. Hope this helps

Hi Austin, my name's Rahul and I work at the Department of Human Services in a team answering Centrelink questions posted on sites such as this. Just adding to the previous answer to your question, as a student on Youth Allowance you can earn up to $236 before tax per fortnight before your Youth Allowance is affected. Income between $236 and $316 reduces Youth Allowance by 50 cents in the dollar, and income over $316 per fortnight reduces it by 60 cents in the dollar. If you're a Youth Allowance full-time student you're able to accumulate up to $6,000 of any unused portion of your fortnightly income free area. It's called an Income Bank, and the accumulated income bank credits can be used to offset any income earned that exceeds your fortnightly income free area. There's more info about the Income Bank on the Centrelink website here: http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/publications/st010.htm There's lots more info about the personal income test for Youth Allowance here: http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/payments/ya_iat.htm#income Hope that helps.
