What is the rate of sales tax?

If the sales tax on a $30 item is $1.80, what is the sales tax rate?

  • This is a question on my GED study guide. All it says is Solution: $1.80= n/100 * $30 n=6, so 6% is the sale tax rate How do you actually solve this problem??? Thanks....

  • Answer:

I'll give you an example. In Canada, the HST tax rate is 12% If you want to find the tax for a $30 dollar item, you would want to find 12% of $30. 12% = 0.12 Therefore 12% of $30 = 0.12 x 30 Tax rate x item cost = tax on item So Tax rate = tax on item/item cost Tax rate = 1.8/30 Tax rate = 0.06 0.06=6% So the sales tax rate is 6% Hope that helped :)

Meh, Price x tax rate = tax P x r = T Solver for r $30r = $1.80 r = 1.80/30 r = 0.06 or 6%

Your question is "1.8 is what percent of 30?" To do "x is what percent of y?" just divide x by y. 1.8/30 = 0.06 = 6 percent. That's the same thing your book showed you, just written a different way.

P/100=1.8/30 30p = 180 ....divide both sides by 30 30p/30 = 180/30 P = 6%
