How to get tax back after working in new zealand and australia?

  • i have recently returned back to the uk after spending one year travelling and working around australia and one in new zealand. i worked alot whilst in both places so know that i am owed quite a lot of tax! i was wondering if anyone else who has done the same thing and has recieved tax back could advise me how they went about this as i'm not sure what is the best way to do it! i've looked through many interent sites but they all seem to want to rip me off or they are offices in the countries so will cost a fortune to call! any advice would be much appreciated. thanks

How about contacting the embassies for those countries? Would also suggest Googling New Zealand income tax and Australia income tax. There is a good website on the latter by tenongroup.com.

Do your Australian income tax return online first as suggested. You will need to contact all your previous employers and get a 'payment summary report' otherwise known as the group certificate for each financial year (1 Jul to 30 Jun) you worked in Australia. If everything was done properly you will most likely get a tax refund. Don't forget that you can also claim all your superannuation back if you live overseas. Find out from your employers the name of the superannuation funds where your super was paid to and your member number. Then, you should be able to contact the super funds through the net or by phone. All the best

How do you know of you'll get any tax back? Maybe the correct amount of tax you owed was taken out of your wages here and you're not due a refund? You won't know until you lodge returns, anyway. You can do it online yourself via the Aussie Tax Office website here, using their programme called e-tax: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/pathway.asp?pc=001/002/014 Find out more about how non-residents are taxed in Australia first: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.asp?doc=/content/29089.htm http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.asp?doc=/content/14747.htm

Hmmm... when i went to America i recall seeing a tax refund form in the US airport on the way home that i didn't fill - but i presume would have allowed me claim back tax that i paid on items if i would have sent it off. Maybe contact the Britsh Embassy? I dunno :)
