How do I know I am on the right tax code?

Is my husbands tax code correct?

  • i have no idea how to check this or make sure it is correct my husband works 40 hrs a week and i stay at home with my 4 girls all under 11...his tax code is 645L and he gets paid weekly....how do i know if this is right???

    Normal code is 647L, but the discrepancy would result in an overpayment of tax of £4.00 in the year. There is probably a good reason for this restriction. Does he have an employment benefit at his job, value £20 a year? Or maybe a small underpayment of tax for a previous year? In the UK now there is no marriage allowance, nor a tax allowance for children (you get that in tax credits, or whatever instead). So I don't think his tax deductions will be too far out.

645L means that he can earn £6459 each year before he starts to pay tax. This is the current basic personal allowance so it sounds right to me.

It;'s actually a bit less than the current personal allowance, which is 6475, so there is some restriction in his code. He needs to ring the tax office and ask them to send him a notice of coding showing how the code is made up, so that he can query it if he is unsure. What job does he do? Check that his fixed rate expense allowance in the code is correct.
