Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance... do I pay it back when I get a job?

  • Just crunching some numbers (I'm a planner), and I'm missing a piece of the puzzle... Do I have to pay back Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance when I get a job? If yes, is it in the form of tax, ie I get a different tax code or something? I've search google, but found nothing specific to Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, only a yahoo answer concerning NI contribution jobseekers. ALSO Money owed to the social fun when get a job, is there like a table of bands in relation to the wage from the job and amount owed, in which it is payed back, or is it based purely on the individuals income Thanks!

Just wanted to point out, Income based JSA is for those who either have not worked or who have not got enough NI contributions, so to say you have paid for it, is wrong, unless you have worked but just haven't built up enough OR have been on NI based and after 6 months have had to go onto income based. Income based based on household income. (more restrictions on savings, and partner's income taken into consideration as based on income of household) NI based is based on how many NI contributions you have made. (less restrictions on savings, partner's income not taken into account) So, there are in fact many people who claim income based JSA who have never worked before or paid into the system! THIS is why SO many people have a problem with young dole dossers! There are many on JSA who HAVE worked and worked for many years and good jobs! BUT people tend to thrown them in together. I myself claimed JSA and got a job 3 months later. My 45 yr old aunty had to claim for a while! JSA is paid through your NI and tax AND other people's NI and tax. Hence why so many working people feel peed off when some young thing is sat on their a** having never paid into the system. Anyway, you will not have to pay it back and only loans from the DWP must be paid back and is taken off either your current benefits or when you go back to work, will be set at an amount each week or month. If you can afford to pay it all back at once, then you can!

No you do not pay it back. You have been paying NI contributions and this entitles you to JSA.
