Job opportunities for an 18 year old?

Part-time work for 18 year-old UK students?

  • I'm currently an 18 year-old studying A-Levels in College, and I'm finding it VERY difficult to find any kind of part-time work to support myself. I've been looking online for over 2 years, and every site I've come across has been useless. All the jobs advertised are either ridiculously far away, expired or will only consider experienced candidates I did a B-Tec in Motor Vehicle enginerring last year, but gave up on that due to the lack of career opportunities I've been to my local Job Centre, and they've told me there's nothing they can offer to help full-time students. Which is very annoying because they'll gladly support the smackheads you see outside the Job Centre at 8 in the morning, smoking whatever and clutching cans of Special Brew What help is available to somebody in my position? Because I'm not eligible for EMA or any other funding, and desperately need to sit my driving tests before the end of the year

  • Answer:

I employed students in my catering business they worked weekends and through the holidays. You have to get off your bum and walk. Go to every shop, cafe, bar in your area and ASK. My son when at Uni worked p/t at Tescos stacking shelves. Good Luck.

Hotels, kitchens, bars, agencies, walk the walk - go direct, ask to see the manager - ask nicely, have CV with contact details ready to hand over. Ask nicely and dont take it personally when they say "no vacancies". Know your bus routes and times so you can know what shifts you can work - cleaning, bar work, kitchen porter, night porter, do NOT take commision work (always a rip off).

THEY PROBABLY HIRE THOSE "smackheads you see outside the Job Centre at 8 in the morning, smoking whatever and clutching cans of Special Brew" BECAUSE THEY WORK. WHILE SELF RIGHTEOUS PEOPLE LIKE YOU WANT A DESK JOB available to somebody in my position? LAMEBRAIN.

It's great if you can find something related to your degree, but unfortunately it's only a lucky few that manage this. I graduated already 6 years ago, and looking back, I don't mind that I had a lot of unschooled jobs. For example, I have seen pricks in high positions that were talking about the cleaning lady like she was just a stupid immigrant bride, not knowing that this girl was brave enough to leave her unhappy pre-arranged marriage with 5(!!) children and to work 3 (!!) jobs in order to help all 5 (!!) children get through university. What am I getting at? It's the only time in your life that you get the chance to see the other side of society. So, work at McDonalds, work as a cleaner, a waiter or a paper delivery boy. You will be surprised how much added value it will have later on in your life.
