What does the tax code 522L/1 mean?

I am a junior doctor in UK and I have got my first salary with tax code of BR NONCUM, what does that mean?

  • I am a junior doctor in UK and I have got my first salary with tax code of BR NONCUM, what does that mean? If i calculate my tax with this code on, I hardly get any tax free allowance in a year, but without this I get lot. Also, the first salary I got is only the basic salary which does not include any banding or additional work allowance, that will be there from next salary. How much tax I would have to pay for 51500 pounds a year with pension deduction? I feel like crap that they are taking everything away from my salary.

  • Answer:

Basic Rate - Non Cumulative so they have given you a temporary code and are not giving you a tax allowance - it’s quite normal for the first month but contact your pay office if it isn’t sorted and repaid by month 2. Did you hand in your P45 or notice of tax coding when you started work? - if not do so straight away, if you haven’t got either then contact your pay office / Revenues and Customs. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm gives the tax and NI rates and allowances.

If this is your only or main employment then you are on the wrong code. First salary - did you get a P46 and fail to fill it in? That is the most common cause of a wrong code. Ask the HR department for a P46 - fill it in and hand it in.
