Can i still claim jsa if i earn £85 a week?

How does work affect contribution based JSA?

  • I know you can still claim contribution based JSA in the UK if you work less than 16 hours a week, but how does that affect the JSA you receive? I asked at the job centre and couldn't get a straight answer. If the JSA is reduced, by how much is it reduced? I know this will depend on how much I earn, but there must be guidelines they use. Thanks

  • Answer:

If you are single with no disability the first 10 pounds is disregarded, thereafter it is deducted pound for pound from your JSA. Eg if you earn £50: 50 - 10 = 40, 40 off your JSA Basically you can only be £10 better off per week. EDIT: because some people get income based JSA and have different conditions. If you were severly disabled and choose to claim JSA you would get paid the basic allowance, a disability premium, and enhanced disability premium and a severe disability premium, you might also get a carers premium. This would add up to a JSA payment of £187 per week, 15 hours at mimimum wage will still mean JSA is payable (a disabled person keeps £15), but for the average Joe on basic rate they can only be better off by £10
