When should i expect my tax refund?

I submitted my P50 form a couple of weeks ago. When can I expect to get my tax refund from HMRC?

  • I did an internship for 10 weeks over the summer and was taxed. I am a student and am now back to study and do not expect to work anytime before the next tax year begins. I am also wondering how much tax refund am I entitled? Do I get back the whole amount of tax that I paid?

  • Answer:

I was told yesterday that it would be at least 7 weeks for mine. Being a student you should get it all back, unless you earnt over £647 per month, but if you hadn't worked before (from april this year) they'll average it out and I doubt you'll go over it! I actually got some tax I didn't even know I was owed from 08/09 where they've done that review because everyone underpaid! I was one of the (sort of) lucky few who'd overpaid! *tuts* Stupid employers not getting the tax code right!

Kind of depends - post is a bit sticky now - some we get in a week - some can be 5 weeks. Normal allowance is £6475 - so if you earned under that and are sure you will not work again or claim before 6th April 2011 you get all tax back (but not NI)
