Do i have to pay council tax?

Why do I as a full-time student have to pay council tax?

  • We filled out a form for tax exemption because normally me and my sister (who are in full-time education) don't have to pax council tax. My mums a single parent and we just got a letter at our house saying me and my sister do not qualify for a tax discount because 3 adults live in the house. We never had to pay council tax until now. I'm in my 2nd year at university and my sister is in her 2nd year at college. It also says to qualify for a discount 4 of the 5 adults would need to be students. That just doesn't make any sense, did they change the rules or something? We've had 3 adults living in our house for the past 4 years! Normally we just take in our council tax exempion certificates (from college and uni) into the local service centre but this time we decided to fill in a form and sent in our evidence yet they say we have to pay.

  • Answer:

benefits are changing. If you have one working adult in the house then council tax is due. I would call the council and get a specific reason from them, they are usually very helpful. I thought council tax was done by house banding so even though your sister and yourself maybe exempt your mum would still have to pay council tax.

Council Tax is a tax based on the property and there can be discounts depending on the circumstances of the people living there. If everyone is a full time student then there is a 100% discount. There are then other categories that may get a discount. So if some of you are students and all the others are in the other categories (eg apprentice, in certain full time training) then you may get a 50% discount. If everyone apart from one person is a full time student or in one of the other categories then you will get a 25% discount. There could be a number of reasons why the bill has changed: - Has your mum's circumstances changed? - In previous years did the council only think you and your sister were living there and hence mistakenly give you the 100% discount - Has there been an admin mistake, you say about you, your sister and your mum but mention the council say that 4 of the 5 adults. Who do they think the other adults are? Are they wrong? If not then the circumstances of those other two adults would affect what if any discount you would get. Best thing to do is to go to the council and explain the case with the past years documents that prove that you didn't pay before....
