Should you get taxed if you are a full time student?

Will I get taxed on my job if I am a student ?

  • I am a full time student doing a 1 Year, Access to Higher Education course in social work. I also work at a disability home earning around 800 + a month also full time, and I get taxed quite a bit on it. Am I supposed to be being Taxed or am I entitled to claim Some back ? Started my job March 2009, started college September 2009.

Sorry, but it's a myth that students don't have to pay tax. Most students don't get deductions, but only because they earn less than the £6475 (approximately £540 a month) tax-free personal allowance, to which all UK citizens are entitled. If earnings £800 a month, you will be taxed on £260 @ 20% = £52 tax, plus your NIC. As you started job in March, that was before the start of current tax year, so no backlog of unused personal tax-free allowance. If you had any tax deducted before 5th April, it depends what you were doing before previous 6th April as to whether you are entitled to any rebate. Send P60 to tax office with details of previous employment history if you want it checked. You can check normal deductions on http://www.listentotaxman.com , although that will not do in-year calculations.

How much is "quite a bit"? As long as you are getting your tax allowance (£6,475 is standard) and not being taxed 20% on all income, there is no other extra concession being a full time student who works during term time.

There are no special tax breaks for students, and on more than about £530 per month you are liable to pay tax.
