How much Federal Tax will I have to pay if?

How much tax will I pay on my 2nd job?

  • I have 2 jobs. One is contracted for 15hrs a week but I do overtime to make my total hrs about 30 per week which pays me between 700 and 800pounds a month. My second job is 7.5hrs per week and pays me 45pounds weekly (180pounds a month). I'm waiting for my employers to sort out my tax code so I'm paying the proper tax on my jobs. My tax code is 675 and I do pay tax and national insurance every month on my first job. However, I was told that I would pay a lot more tax and before my employer starts taxing me I'd like the oppurtunity to leave my second job and just have the one. Does anybody know how much extra tax I will end up paying if I keep both jobs? Thanks, x.

I strongly recommend you to use UK Tax Wizard (http://www.iuktax.com) - the app has a special built in feature for cases where you have multiple jobs. This should give you very very accurate results.

As I understand it, you can earn up to your personal tax allowance tax free, and after that all the money you earn will be taxed at the standard rate. If your allowance is covered by the salary on the first job, all that you earn on the second will be taxed at the standard rate - so it will look as if you are paying a lot of tax on that second job! Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please!

There's a neat little on-line calculator (free to use and no need to register to use it) at: http://www.listentotaxman.com/ Tax is paid on your total income, so you'll pay more tax because you are earning more, not just because your earnings are coming from two different jobs. If you leave your second job, your tax bill will go down - but so will your overall take-home pay!

You will pay Tax on your TOTAL income. It matters not if you have a thousand jobs at £10 or 10 jobs at £1,000 or one job at £10,000 a month == you will end up paying EXACTLY THE SAME TOTAL TAX in all cases ...
