Starting a dating site in the UK?

  • I'm thinking of starting my own dating site in the UK online with paid subscriptions, I can design freelance, websites etc so that side will be fine and won't be using the terrible scripts you see but was wondering of the ins & outs associated with taking payments from customers for a monthly membership. Do you have to be a registered sole trader or online ecommerce business for something such as this? Plus what else is involved to avoid conflict on the site and under age people etc. My site would be made to only accept 18 and overs but you and I know people will still try and lie to get on. Any help appreciated and I am aware its a huge competitive market to get into but I am doing it mainly as a project.

    You need is whatever the credit card company requires. That is usually an incorporated legal entity but check with them. Paypal has more relaxed requirements but you still need an entity somewhere in the process as you are taking money on credit for services you have not yet provided (monthly membership up front). You will also need some kind of customer contract and a solicitor should look over it to make sure you are not putting yourself in a position where you could be sued.

Hi Dean As already pointed out you will have to be very careful about making this for over 18's and what sort of waver you will put on the website. Likewise don't forget to cover you back about meeting in a popular place, make sure you tell someone where you're going etc. As the website will make you money you will have to look into maybe registering as a sole trader and changing your tax code. I have no knowledge of dating sites but too make sure people are over 18 shouldn't be too much of a problem if your using paid subscriptions as i doubt many kids have credit cards to use for a subscription payment ? Or just get a small card payment check to verify the new member is a adult if you wish to use a variety of payment methods.
