How can I find out what tax code I'm on?

Im on PAYE but didnt work a full financial year and am not working until Sept. How can i get a Tax rebate?

  • I worked until Feb 27th in my job this year before going travelling for six months. Im PAYE but could find a months tax handy while im away. How do I go about getting this back. My Mrs got hers back in her wages before she left. How do I go about getting mine back before i start work again and they change my Tax code next year. I generally earn a fair bit above the bench mark set for higher rate tax if that makes a difference?

I would have expected employer to pay your refund on last payday for tax year (last payday before 5th April) if you are still on payroll. However, if he didn't, and it sounds as though your job is being kept open for you, you should get form P60. That may be a problem if you are travelling, and it was perhaps sent to your home address. Do you have anyone who could check your mail? It is likely that tax office will need that form to make your refund. There is a new system in place now where employers are encouraged to file their annual returns electronically. This is after my time, and I don't know if pay/tax details are transferred straight onto employees' records under that system. I don't see why that couldn't be done. It used to be done manually by the old DHSS, and took months. If it has gone straight to your tax record, tax office could make refund without form P60. You will have to check with tax office to see what they need to make your refund. When applying, ask for "lump-sum" refund, otherwise tax office may try to make refund through your code number for this year. Wherever you are, repayment has to be made in Sterling, and you are responsible for any currency conversion charges which may occur. As you are travelling, tax office can send cheque to your bank if you give Branch name, address, and sort code, and your account number.

You will need to sent a P50 form to your tax office with your P45 that you recieved from your employer when you finished work. Details about this are on HMRC website : http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/stop-work-refund.htm When you start working again the you'll be in the 09/10 tax year and this should be sorted out in with your next tax code. If your a HR payer they might ask you to do a tax return for 08/09. Update: OK, your employer should sort this out then in their year end calculations. Really they should have paid you the overpaid tax in separate March payment, or has this already been included in your Feb 27 pay? PAYE payers are due some tax back because each time the PAYE calculation is done it assumes that you will continue to earn tax at the rate you have been doing over the tax year. UPDATE What I would have expected is that your employer would run the payroll again in March, the final month and pay you NIL. This would sort out the overpayment and you would have a final payslip with zero salary but a refund of tax. If this hasn't happenned they have probably taken you off the payroll as a leaver when they should have given you a P45. What you need to claim tax back from HMCR is a document to say what you were paid and what tax you paid, normally a P45 or a P60 year end summary. If you need your employer to give you a P60 and you can send this off to your tax office and they will calculate your refund.

Why do you think you're entitled to a months tax refund ? If you're PAYE - you're taxed weekly or monthly ! You don't pay all your tax for one year at once ! Therefore - if you've only worked eleven months of the year - you'll have only been taxed on eleven months salary ! PAYE is exactly that - Pay As You Earn - if you don't work - you don't get paid (and therefore don't pay tax !)
