Answer:
If employer doesn't really know what he is doing, it may be better to ask tax office to issue form P6 to him, showing your correct code number. You can do that asap. We are now too late in tax year to amend the code number for this year. When you get form P60 after 5th April, send that to tax office, together with details of any other employments you may have had since 6th April last, and ask for review and lump-sum refund. Otherwise they may try to repay you by amending code number which would give you dribs and drabs through pay from employer. If you don't do anything, tax office may pick up on it, but that may not be until next autumn or winter. Unlikely code number would be changed until then. Tax office staff advise against using agencies to obtain refund, some of them charge 40% of refund.

If this is your only job then you will be able to claim a tax refund as you will not have been allocated your tax free allowance. There are 2 ways of claiming your tax back: (1) You can claim the tax back by contacting your local tax office, providing a P91 form, as well as your P60/P45s and P85/P86 if applicable. (2) Alternatively you can use an agency to help you. An agency such as: http://www.taxfix.co.uk they charge a fee once they have obtained a refund. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Just make sure that you get all the tax that you are due back and do not let the government keep it.

If this is your only job, you need to ask your employer for a form P46. Sign this to say this is your only or man job and your empoyer will put you on code 647L from 6 April. In order to reclaim tax overpaid this tax year you will need to send your P60 (received in Paril) to your tax office with a letter outlining all yur jobs this year and they will make a repayment via cheque. EDIT: On no account use an agency - this is easily done yourself for free.
