How much do you have to make to claim the child tax credit?

Our family income is 28000 are we eligible for working tax credit and child tax credit in UK?

  • Hello everyone, I was looking over HMRC website but the information i=on that is very complex for me. Can anyone please explain following:- 1). With total family income of 28000 can we get working tax credit and child tax credit? 2).. If we can then does anyone knows the amount which we can get? 3). When and how should we make a claim?

  • Answer:

As far as I can remember working tax credit stops being payable when your income rises above about £21,000. But child tax credit is payable up to an income of about £60,000. My family income is a bit (but not much) above yours and we get about £45 per month child tax credit for 1 child. If both partners work then there is an additional childcare element that (obviously) depends on how much you actually pay in childcare. There are also additional payments for disabled children. You claim by contacting HMRC (the tax office). You should do so ASAP because it cannot be backdated, so the sooner you claim the more you will get in total. In practice the claim is quite simple - you give them some basic details and they work out how much you are entitled to.

You won't be able to get Working Tax Credit, but you should be able to get some Child Tax credits, although not the full amount. The amount you get is dependant on how much income your family gets, but you should be able to get some. I've put the link into the hmrc website, this has a calculator so you can get a rough estimate as to how much you would get. You can make your claim from here as well, or you can go to your nearest tax office to get a form. If you don't have a tax office near you, then yur nearest JobCentre should be able to help you get the form required. (It is only one form for both Child tax credits and Working Tax credits, so you don't have to worry about filling two out, although as I said, you would likely not qualify for working tax credits). http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/payments-entitlement/entitlement/question-how-much.htm
