Should you get taxed if you are a full time student?

I am a 16 year old student with a part-time job, will I get emergency taxed?

  • I have been working part-time for just over a month now and I haven't been paid yet, but I will be doing so at the end of January. I know I do not have to pay tax as I am earning between 20 and 40 pounds a week so nowhere near £6k a year as it states on the tax website, but will I have to pay emergency tax/will this be deducted from my first wage? Many thanks in advance...

  • Answer:

Your tax code will probably be 603L if you aren't working any where else. This means that you don't pay tax on the first £503 paid each month. You would only pay tax on the amount that you are earning if you are on the BR tax code which is 20% of all earnings. Ask your employer for a P46 form and complete it to make sure that you are on the correct tax code for your situation. xxx xx x
