How do I find out my national insurance number in the UK?

What information can an employer find out from my national insurance number? (UK)?

  • When I provide my employer with my National Insurance Number, what information can they get about me? If any? (eg, age, address, other jobs, etc) As I'm doing some Key Skills work on Tax/N.I.N/Jobs etc, and I have to find this out but can't find it anywhere on the web. I know in America they can't find much out, but I need to know about the UK situation. Any info would be appreciated.

  • Answer:

HMRC are bound by the Offical Secrets Act and cannot reveal any information about you to your employer. The NI number exists simply to make sure that your NI contributions are credited to you throughout your wokring life. It doesn't tell anyone else anything else about you.

As far as I know the only sure thing is that the employer can confirm that you are a 'legit' worker. The employer needs to register you as an employee so that NI contributions can be made (both employer and employee payments). By the way try the DWP website where there's loads of info. Hope that helps.

All the NI number tells your employer is that you're legally employable...you're not an illegal immigrant. Your employer needs the number so that the Tax and NI which he pays to HMRC on your behalf gets credited to you.
