My tax code is 647L 1. What does it mean?
-
I was under the impression that I'm due a tax rebate as I was one Basic Rate tax since September. I noticed in February that I was paying £100 a month more tax then a colleague on the same money and queried it. I was told that I had the wrong tax code and now that has been changed to 647L 1. I was unemployed last year until July when I started working full time again. I then changed employers in September and that's when my tax code was changed to BR. My current employer has sorted this problem out but has told me that they cannot pay my rebate because of the 1 at the end of my new tax code and that I would need to sort it out with the tax office. The tax office have informed me that I must wait until I get my P60 for any rebate to be calculated (my employer issues these in May). Does anyone know what the 1 means at the end of my tax code and would I still be likely to get a rebate as a result of the 1?

Answer:
647L means you can earn £6475 before paying tax and this is the standard tax rate Only your tax office can issue rebates, nobody else Once you have your P 60 contact the tax office and they will issue a tax rebate if you are due one Your P60 should be issued to you at the end of April, usually with April's salary if you are paid monthly

647L 1 - you have the standard personal allowance but your employer does not know what you earned before starting with that employer. As of next monday you will start the new tax year and your code will be standard so no worries on that. Check you have a P45 from all stopped employments and the jobcentre - if no P45 from the jobcentre go to them and ask for a "statement of benefit" for the year 10/11. Once you have the P60 for your current employer -covering letter National Insurance Number, name, date of birth, address, previous addresses. Staple everything together and send it to any tax office - covering letter ask for 10/11 to be reviewed.

1 at the end means week 1 basis ie you get 1 weeks share of allowances each week but they do not carry forward You should have an amended code without 1 from 6th April Refunds will not take place until the time stated by tax office, but your allowances should be accumulated from 6 April. Hope this helps a little
