Hi, The above is not strictly true. A payroll department is not responsible for an employees tax code, it is up to the employee. Ask your payroll department for a P46 form or supply them with your P45 from your previous employment. It may be the case that you are due to a tax rebate, but this does depend on other factors such as the 'tax code basis' and whether or not it is cumulative basis (your tax is calculated over the whole tax year and therefore a rebate can be issued) or month/week 1 (this looks at that period only and there fore the tax is based on that particular week or month only. The best people to speak to are your payroll department, they can advise you how to get the rebate based on what you submit to them, but it may involve a few weeks wait before you can contact the HM Revenue & Customs. Under no circumstances assume that the HMRC will issue you a new tax code, they are quick enough to take what they want, but when it comes to giving money back they tend to be quite slow!

We do NOT change code automatically - what we see is an electronic P46 with statement C and code BR and our system code BR. Ask your employer for a P46 - read it, think, fill it in and return to employer. Then tell us in 2 weeks or so when pay changes.

best advice that i can give you: is to phone HMRC + make sure you get the person ,s name that you are talking to so you so you can always name the person you spoke to and the advice they gave you and HMRC can,t deny you have been in contact and your rebate is due from day you made enquiry! but make contact with HRMC because don,t automatically assume they will contact you, best of luck because it,s like talking to a BRICK WALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't leave anything to chance. Ask you employer's HR or Payroll department which tax office the company uses. Get the address and phone them. Have you NI number handy when you phone and if you have one your employee number (may be on your payslip). Explain your situation and they'll help you. They are generally very helpful people, and quite often they can move things along once they know there's a problem. The sooner they know the better! Just Google the tax office name if you don't have a phone number.
